The combination of academic studies, professional commitments along with personal tasks seems similar to walking across a tightrope particularly during intensive diploma or certification coursework. New Brunswick College of Business & Technology (NBBT) recognizes that most students at our college do not follow traditional full-time student schedules. These students include working adults combined with Canadian newcomers together with their responsibilities of parenting alongside professional reorientation. The success of every student depends upon the mastery of effective time management methods.
Your time management strategies from these studies will enable IT students and Financial Planning and Business Management learners to better organize their time and minimize stress for program success.
1. Know Your Why: Start with Purpose
Before planning your time, remind yourself why you chose this path:
- Better job opportunities
- A stable income for your family
- Career advancement
- A new beginning in Canada
Keeping your “why” in mind will motivate you to stay disciplined when things get busy.
2. Use a Weekly Schedule (and Stick to It)
Use a weekly planner, digital calendar (Google Calendar), or even a wall chart to:
- Block out class times
- Add your work shifts or job hours
- Schedule family responsibilities
- Allocate study time
Tip: Use color coding — one color for work, one for school, one for personal.
3. Follow the 3-Hour Rule for Classes
For every 1 hour of class at NBBT, try to set aside at least 2–3 hours per week for:
- Reviewing course materials
- Working on assignments
- Practicing software or tools
Example: If you attend a 2-hour Primavera P6 class, plan for an extra 4–6 hours that week to practice and master the content.
4. Break Tasks in Smaller Chunks
Instead of saying “Study Project Management Professional (PMP) for 4 hours,” break it into:
- 30 mins: Review last week’s class notes
- 1 hour: Practice with hands-on exercises
- 30 mins: Quiz or review questions
- 1 hour: Work on mini-project or homework
Small wins = More motivation = Better retention.
5. Eliminate Distractions During Study Time
- Turn off phone notifications (or use Focus mode)
- Tell family members in advance about your study window
- Use noise-cancelling headphones or study music
- Log out of Netflix or social media during study sessions
Bonus Tool: Try the Pomodoro Technique — 25 mins focus, 5 mins break.
6. Use NBBT Resources
Take advantage of what your college offers:
- Instructor Q&A sessions
- Access to recorded sessions or labs
- Peer study groups
- Resume support and career coaching
- Email support when you fall behind
Remember: You’re not alone — NBBT team is here to help you succeed.
7. Prioritize What Matters Most
You don’t have to be perfect in everything — just strategic.
Ask yourself:
- What deadlines are coming up?
- Which course is toughest for me right now?
- What can I delegate at home or work?
This helps you spend energy where it counts.
From Business to Tech, Project Management to French Language your journey starts here at NBBT College. Discover all courses offered!
8. Schedule Self-Care — Seriously
Yes, studying is important. But so is sleep, rest, and well-being.
Without proper rest:
- Focus drops
- Memory fades
- Motivation disappears
Take breaks. Walk. Sleep 7–8 hours. Eat well. You’ll perform better in the long run.
9. Communicate with Instructors & Employers
Don’t suffer in silence. If you’re overwhelmed:
- Talk to your instructor at NBBT College — they may offer flexibility
- Speak with your employer about reduced hours (if possible)
- Ask family or roommates for extra help around the house
Most people want to see you succeed — but they can only help if they know.
10. Celebrate Progress, Not Just Perfection
- Did you finish your first assignment in French?
- Submit your Data Analytics – Power BI test case on time?
- Attend all classes this week?
👏 Celebrate it!
Small milestones matter — they build momentum and confidence.
